5 Reasons to Teach Children the Importance of Recycling

The world is currently facing an environmental catastrophe, so learning how to care for our environment is an increasingly essential life skill. It’s one that kids can start to learn from a very young age. Teaching children about the importance of recycling can be fun and rewarding, in every sense.

At Wimbledon Day Nursery School in Wimbledon, we start explaining recycling to preschoolers as soon as they start preschool. We understand the importance of teaching recycling to preschoolers. We want them to get excited about recycling and protecting the environment from an early age.

Here are 5 Reasons to Teach Children the Importance of Recycling and why there’s no better time than now to get started!

How to Teach Pre-schoolers About Recycling

1. Have fun recycling

Teaching recycling to preschoolers who go to daycare in Wimbledon is fun and easy. You’ll be surprised at how quickly they learn about the three R’s – recycle, reuse, and reduce when you make it fun for them. For example, show kids the possibilities for turning household items such as a soda bottles into sprinklers, or milk cartons into planters for seeds.

2. Learn About How We Impact the Environment

Now it’s time to move on to explain why recycling is important for kids and how it benefits the environment. Make a fun game with creative quiz cards to keep the kids engaged while they learn what happens when you don’t care for the environment.

3. Teach Kids Where Their Rubbish Goes

Children need to understand where trash ends up (landfills, etc) and how it affects the environment. Use visuals (photos, videos, etc) of garbage to help your children understand and be more intentional about what they throw away instead of recycling.

4. Make More Conscious Purchasing Decisions

As one of the leading playschools in Wimbledon, our responsibility at Wimbledon Day Nursery is to lead by example and make conscious purchasing decisions.

5. Spread the Word

Teaching kids about recycling makes a difference that positively affects the world. If your children think twice about throwing something away or buying something that won’t be useful, then you are raising children who care for the environment, and they will also spread the word to other kids.
