How Long Does It Really Take for a Child to Settle at Nursery?

If you are standing at the nursery gate wondering how long this is going to take, here is the honest answer. Most children take around two to four weeks to settle into nursery, although some feel comfortable within a few days while others may need closer to six weeks. There is no set timeline, and knowing what to expect can make those first few weeks feel a little easier.

How Long Does It Take a Child to Settle at Nursery, On Average?

For most children, settling into nursery takes two to four weeks of regular attendance. This is a helpful average rather than a strict rule.

  • Babies and children already used to being cared for by someone other than a parent often settle within days.
  • Toddlers aged roughly 18 months to 3 years, when separation anxiety peaks, sometimes need closer to six weeks.
  • Children attending part time, such as one session a week, often take longer, as there are more gaps between visits.

What Affects How Quickly a Child Settles Into Nursery?

There is no one reason why one child settles quickly while another needs more time. Age, temperament, previous experience of being apart from a parent, and how regularly they attend can all make a difference.

Age and Prior Separation Experience

Babies under around eight months often settle quickest, as separation anxiety has usually not fully developed. Toddlers who have rarely spent time away from a parent may need a gentler, more gradual introduction to nursery.

Attendance and Key Person Consistency

Children who attend regularly, and see the same key person each session, tend to settle faster than those on an irregular pattern, because routine and a familiar face build trust quickly.

Helps settling  Slows settling
A consistent key person  Frequent staff changes
Regular attendance  Irregular, one-session weeks
Calm, brief goodbyes  Lingering goodbyes

Is It Normal for a Child to Cry at Nursery?

Yes. Crying at drop-off is a normal part of separation anxiety and does not usually mean your child remains unhappy after you leave. According to the NCT, separation anxiety is a typical developmental stage that can begin between eight months and a year old, and it can continue in some form until school age.

When a Toddler Not Settling at Nursery Needs Extra Support

If your child remains very distressed well beyond drop-off, continues to struggle after four to six weeks, or you notice changes in sleep or appetite, talk to their key person. Together, you can look at whether the settling-in plan needs adjusting.

How a Key Person Helps Your Child Settle Faster

Every registered nursery in England must assign your child a key person under the statutory EYFS framework. Having one familiar person who gets to know your child and your family can provide reassurance during those early weeks. This relationship, built through familiarity and trust, is one of the strongest factors in how quickly a child settles.

Nursery Settling-In Tips That Actually Work

A few simple things can make the transition into nursery easier for both you and your child.

  • Keep goodbyes short, warm and confident.
  • Attend consistently rather than in occasional bursts.
  • Bring a familiar comforter from home.
  • Talk positively about nursery before and after each session.
  • Ask staff for a quick update after drop-off for reassurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take a child to settle into nursery?

Most children settle within two to four weeks of starting, though some take just days and others up to six weeks. Consistent attendance and a stable key person both help shorten this time.

Is it normal for a child to cry at nursery?

Yes, crying at drop-off is a common sign of separation anxiety, a normal stage of development, and it rarely means a child is unhappy once their parent has left.

My toddler is not settling at nursery after several weeks. What should I do?

Speak to your child’s key person. They can review the settling-in plan, offer shorter or more frequent sessions, and check nothing else is affecting your child at home or at nursery.

How many settling-in sessions will my child need?

This varies by nursery and by child, but most settling-in plans include two to three short visits before a first full session, building up gradually from there.

Does a comforter help a child settle into nursery?

Yes. A familiar toy or blanket from home can offer real reassurance during the settling-in period and is a simple, effective tool most nurseries encourage.

Should I stay with my child during settling in?

Usually yes, in the earliest sessions. Staying briefly, then leaving for short, gradually longer periods, helps your child learn that you always come back.
