Building Healthy Sleep Routines for Toddlers as the Nights Draw In

As the nights draw in, it can become a little harder to keep a toddler sleep routine on track. Darker mornings and evenings, along with the October clock change, can unsettle even a sleep pattern that has been working well for months. The good news is that a few small, consistent adjustments can make the change easier and help your toddler sleep well through autumn and winter.

How Much Sleep Does a Toddler Need?

According to the NHS, toddlers generally need between 11 and 14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, including naps.

Age  Recommended sleep (24 hours)
1 to 2 years  11 to 14 hours
3 to 5 years  10 to 13 hours

These figures are a guide rather than a target that every child needs to meet exactly. If your toddler wakes in reasonably good spirits and gets through the day without being excessively cranky, they are likely getting enough sleep.

What Does a Healthy Toddler Bedtime Routine Look Like?

A healthy toddler bedtime routine does not need to be complicated. It can simply be a short, calm sequence of familiar activities, done in the same order each night.

Building a Simple, Repeatable Sequence

Consistency, not complexity, is what makes a routine work. A simple sequence such as bath, teeth, story and a cuddle, followed at roughly the same time each evening, gives your toddler a clear sense of what comes next and helps them wind down.

Getting the Sleep Environment Right

A dark, cool, screen-free bedroom supports better sleep than a bright or stimulating one. The NHS recommends switching off screens 30 to 60 minutes before bed, giving your toddler some quiet time to settle before going to sleep.

How Do the Clocks Going Back Affect Toddler Sleep?

When the clocks go back in October, your toddler’s internal body clock does not shift automatically. That can mean earlier waking for a week or two while they adjust.

  • Shift bedtime and naptime around 10 to 15 minutes later each day in the run-up to the change, rather than moving the whole hour at once.
  • Keep the bedroom dark in the early morning so that light does not signal that it is time to wake.
  • Keep the usual routine and wake time as consistent as possible while your toddler adjusts.

Building a Winter Sleep Routine as the Nights Draw In

A winter sleep routine may need a little more structure as natural light becomes less available. Daylight plays a role in regulating a toddler’s body clock, so getting outside earlier in the day can be useful.

Try to keep nap and mealtimes consistent too and avoid making sudden changes to bedtime. These small habits can help keep your toddlers’ sleep rhythm steady as the evenings become darker.

How Does Toddler Sleep Affect Nursery Days?

Well-rested toddlers are generally more settled, able to concentrate and ready to join in at nursery, so the sleep they get at home can make a real difference to how their day goes.

When a toddler is overtired, separation, transitions and group activities can feel much harder to manage. Keeping a consistent sleep routine at home can therefore make those parts of the nursery day a little easier too.

Supporting Your Toddler’s Sleep Routine Through the Seasons

At Wimbledon Day Nursery, our key person team works closely with families to keep nap times and daily routines as consistent as possible between home and nursery, especially as the seasons change. Speak to our admissions team or book a visit to find out more about how we support your toddler’s wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sleep does a toddler need?

According to the NHS, toddlers aged 1 to 2 need around 11 to 14 hours of sleep in 24 hours, including naps, while 3- to 5-year-olds need roughly 10 to 13 hours.

What does a healthy toddler bedtime routine include?

A healthy toddler bedtime routine is a short, consistent sequence of calming activities, such as a bath, teeth brushing, a story and a cuddle, done in the same order at roughly the same time each night.

How do the clocks going back affect toddler sleep?

Because a toddler’s body clock does not adjust automatically, early waking is common for a week or two after the clocks go back. Shifting bedtime and naptime by 10 to 15 minutes a day in the days before the change can ease the transition.

How can I build a winter sleep routine for my toddler?

Getting outside for natural light earlier in the day, keeping nap and mealtimes consistent, and avoiding sudden changes to bedtime all help a toddler’s sleep stay steady as daylight hours shorten.

Does toddler sleep affect how they cope at nursery?

Yes. Well-rested toddlers generally settle, concentrate and manage transitions more easily, so a consistent sleep routine at home supports their day at nursery too.

What if my toddler’s sleep routine falls apart in winter?

A wobble is normal during seasonal changes. Returning to a consistent bedtime routine for a week or two is usually enough to get things back on track. Speak to your health visitor if disrupted sleep continues for several weeks.
