Fun Listening Activities for Kids to Build Good Listening Skills

Teaching listening skills for kids starts with setting a good example. Kids learn easier when they observe actions vs when they are told what to do!

We have created this list of fun activities to improve listening and speaking skills because kids tend to learn easier via play and practice. Hands-on listening activities for kids are an effective and fun way for kids to hone their listening skills as they develop.

Learning speaking and listening skills through activities is not a new technique. Kids have been playing listening games for preschoolers for generations, including Simon Says, Mother May I, Freeze tag, Red Light Green Light, and more.

At our Nursery Schools in Wimbledon, our teachers at Wimbledon Day Nursery like to get creative and come up with fun activities for kids to build good listening skills. Keep reading to find out the best ways to get your students engaged and listening!

Our Top 5 Fun Listening and Speaking Activities for Kids to Build Good Listening Skills

1. Read Aloud from Books

Reading to your children every day will improve their listening skills and strengthen their audible learning skills, too!

2. Play the Game – Follow These Simple Directions

Listening to directions on how to stack a tower of blocks (for example) makes this activity something that kids will love to do because they can have hands-on fun (and learning), all the while “listening” to directions.

3. Play a Musical Listening Game

The Sound Box is a musical listening game for early years that gives them the opportunity to listen to the sounds of different musical instruments.

4. Create a Sound Scavenger Hunt

Go on a sound scavenger hunt outdoors and think about all the different noises you hear along the way such as car horns, birds chirping, music, etc.

5. Play the Listening Game of “Red Light Green Light”

Playing a simple game of “Red Light, Green Light” is such a great way to work on those early listening skills. All kids will love this!

We want our students who go to Preschool in Wimbledon to have fun while learning. At Wimbledon Day Nursery we encourage active and fun learning so our students get excited about learning.
