Simple Ways You Can Boost Your Child’s Independent Play Skills

When your children are young, it can be tempting to be present for each and every moment of their lives. However, as they grow and become more independent, it’s important to let them have unstructured free time to develop their sense of self.

Independent Play

Independent play is important to your child’s cognitive development. It gives them the freedom to be more creative and to let their imagination take hold. Free play also helps children disconnect from the constant screens, giving them a chance to unwind and free their minds from distraction.

  • Other benefits of independent play:
  • Teaching children patience and self-regulation skills.
  • Fostering problem-solving skills.
  • Promoting experimentation and curiosity.

There are also several benefits for parents. As children become more comfortable playing on their own, they won’t be at your side 24/7 seeking help or attention. Parents are people too and they need quiet time and alone time free from parenting duties.

It can be hard, but don’t feel guilty for taking a moment for yourself while your child plays independently. Not only is free-play helping you, but it’s helping them learn and grow.

How to Encourage Free Play

Just because free-play is less structured, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t any rules or expectations. Independent playtime still needs to have boundaries to keep everyone safe and happy.

  • Set a time limit: Let your child know that they have a set amount of time per day dedicated to free play. A timer can help with this.
  • This isn’t a timeout: Independent play is a chance for them to let their imaginations bloom. Make sure to always frame this time as positive and fun.
  • Lay out ground rules: Ensure your child knows what they are and aren’t allowed to do and where they are allowed to do it.
  • Positive reinforcement: When the time limit is up, praise your child and give them your full attention. Positive feedback will encourage your child to want independent play.
